Get Anki

Anki is the free flashcard program your cards go into. It's on a laptop, not a phone, and it takes about five minutes to set up. You only do this once.

1. Download it

On your laptop, open the Anki website and download the version for your computer (Mac, Windows or Linux).

Mac: open the downloaded file and drag Anki into Applications. The first time you open it, macOS may ask you to confirm; click Open.
Windows: open the downloaded file and click through the installer.

2. Open it once

Open Anki. It will show one empty deck called Default. If it asks about syncing or an AnkiWeb account, you can skip that for now; your cards live on this computer.

3. Bring in your cards from Apila

  1. In Apila, click Download for Anki. A file ending in .apkg lands in your Downloads folder.
  2. Double-click that file. Anki opens and shows what it's about to import.
  3. Click Import. Your cards appear in a deck called Apila, with one sub-deck per language.

Do this every time you download from Apila. Cards you already have are skipped automatically, so it's safe to import the same file twice.

4. Study

Click the Apila deck, then Study Now. Anki shows you a word; think of the meaning; click to reveal; tell Anki how it went. Ten minutes a day is plenty. Anki decides when to show each word again so you don't forget it.

On your phone too?

Optional. Anki can sync to a free account at AnkiWeb, and then to the phone app: AnkiDroid on Android is free; AnkiMobile on iPhone costs money. Your laptop is enough to start.
